Freelancing isn’t dying. It’s transforming. Across industries, freelancing is thriving, but translators are lagging because too many depend on agencies.
Traditional agency-dependent models are shrinking. The real growth is in niches—legal, medical, creative—and in working directly with clients who value expertise and pay accordingly.
The shift is simple but tough: stop seeing yourself as just a translator-for-hire and start thinking like a business owner. Diversify, market, specialize, and adapt. Freelancing works but only if you stop letting agencies define your career.
What to do?
Quit the brokered model.
Build direct client relationships.
Agencies are fine for cash flow, but they’re not a career.
Not ready yet? Target in-house roles as a more stable path.

Here’s a quick insight from one of our recent LinkedIn polls, where you shared how translators should adapt when freelancing feels unsustainable.
62% of you said you're building a hybrid career, blending freelancing with in-house work or other projects. Only 16% would pivot fully to in-house roles, 12% aim to double down on direct clients, and 10% consider leaving the field altogether.
Clearly, the majority are not quitting rather diversifying. This shows that translators value flexibility and multiple income streams over sticking to a single path, which can reduce burnout and financial risk.
